Two people died in a mountain accident in the Italian Alps.

Two Swiss alpinists died on the Italian side of the Matterhorn, the rescue workers said.

The two had crashed, they could only be recovered dead in the morning at an altitude of around 3100 meters.

Seven people were killed and eight others injured in a glacier collapse on the Marmolada in northern Italy on Sunday.

Two Germans are among the injured.

After an overnight break, rescue workers resumed their search for possible missing persons.

However, hopes of finding survivors faded.

The mountain rescuers fear that it could take weeks or even longer before all the dead are located and recovered from the ice and boulder masses.

The avalanche has now settled and has become very hard.

Another case in the Italian-Slovenian border area

A total of 14 people had been reported missing by their families.

However, it is unclear whether they were all in the accident area.

After record temperatures, part of the Marmolada glacier broke off on Sunday afternoon, causing an avalanche of snow, ice and rock to fall.

An alpinist had also recently caused a stir in the Italian-Slovenian border area: after a seven-day search, mountain rescuers found a missing climber on a ledge in early July.

31-year-old Gianpaolo Baggio fell while climbing Monte Matajur - and survived a week on the ledge without eating.

Baggio was dehydrated but otherwise healthy apart from minor injuries, the Rai television station had reported.

The climber had slipped and fallen on the ledge;

he lost his backpack along with his mobile phone.

And because the ledge was so steep, he could neither climb nor descend.
