James Cameron apparently has doubts about being able to accompany the planned »Avatar sequels to the end as a director. The films asked too much of him.

Does the successful director James Cameron not even want to finish his science fiction series »Avatar« himself?

The Canadian made hints in this direction in an interview with »Empire« magazine.

"The Avatar films are asking everything of me," said the 67-year-old.

He has a few other projects in development that are exciting.

"I think at some point - I don't know if it's after the third or fourth film - I want to pass the baton to a director I trust so I can do other things that interest me too.

Or maybe not."

"Avatar" is still his world, though, Cameron said.

Here he can deal with all topics that are important to him in his private and artistic life, such as family, sustainability, climate or nature.

"I got more and more excited the further I got with the story." He actually hopes to be able to do the fourth film, but that also depends on the market.

Film three has already been shot and will appear in any case.

"I really hope we can do four and five because it's a big story at the end of the day."

Further parts are to appear in 2024, 2026 and 2028

The film "Avatar - Aufbruch nach Pandora" is considered the most financially successful film in history with worldwide revenues of over 2.8 billion dollars.

In 2017, Cameron began working on four more »Avatar« films simultaneously.

The planned film starts were postponed more often, most recently because of the corona pandemic.

"Avatar: The Way of Water" is now scheduled to hit theaters in mid-December, followed by the other parts in 2024, 2026 and 2028.

Cameron himself is one of the most successful directors in Hollywood.

In 1998, his film »Titanic« won, among other things, the Oscar in the categories »Best Picture«, »Best Director« and »Best Editing«.

»Avatar – Departure for Pandora« was nominated in the respective categories.
