This October 24, a group of Israeli tourists, cheated by a guide, enter the "Bayt Dakira" (House of memory) opened in 2020 in Essaouira, Morocco.
André Azoulay, to whom we owe this house dedicated to Jewish culture, applauds loudly.
"Since Morocco has reestablished its relations with Israel and opened air links, it is a continuous flow",
rejoices this man of Jewish faith, long adviser to the palace, and whose family has lived in Essaouira for several generations.
The traditional house, completely restored, hosts the old synagogue of Slat Attia, a museum and a research center.
"In Essaouira, relations between Jews and Muslims were unique, if only because the city had, until the 1960s, 16,000 Jews for 22,000 inhabitants,"
he continues.
In this city, with the 37 synagogues, "
there was a real shared culture", he
insists, stressing that the House was inaugurated by the king himself.
