The US comics scene is increasingly trying to depict diversity and different sexual identities.
A black, gay hero appears in the "Aquaman" series.
It was only recently that Batman's assistant Robin became known to be bisexual.
Now the Superman series is following suit.
In a new comic, Superman's son falls in love with a journalist - and celebrates his coming out.
Jon Kent, the son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane, is discovering his bisexual identity, DC Comics announced on Monday.
The young superhero made friends with reporter Jay Nakamura in the previous issue of the comic series "Superman: Son of Kal-El".
In the new issue, which will appear on November 9th, there is now a kissing scene between the two of them.
"I've always said that everyone needs heroes and that everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes," said the author of the new issue, Tom Taylor, according to the DC announcement.
He said he was very grateful that DC and Warner Bros. shared this idea.
"Now even more people can find themselves in the most powerful comic book superhero."
The artist John Timms is responsible for the drawings in the new issue.
He feels immensely honored to show Jon Kent "how to tackle his complex modern life while saving the world from its greatest dangers, villains and threats."
According to the publisher's announcement, readers of the new comic book will have to deal with a Superman who tries to save everyone - and who is burned out mentally and physically as a result.
At this moment his friend Jay is there "to take care of the man of steel".
The fictional character of Jon Kent was first introduced in July 2015 in "Convergence: Superman # 2".
In November 2016, he officially took over the role of Superboy.
Since July 2021 he has been the title character of the comic series "Superman: Son of Kal-El".
