Juan José Sebreli has coronavirus and is hospitalized in a medical center in the City of Buenos Aires.

Sources close to the 89-year-old writer confirmed to Clarín that the intellectual tested positive. He is admitted to the Italian Hospital.

"I regret to announce that my friend and teacher, Juan José Sebreli, is hospitalized with a positive COVID19 diagnosis," wrote Congressman Fernando Iglesias on his Twitter account.

The legislator added that Sebreli "is in good spirits, asked for books and continues working" on his next book, along with Marcelo Gioffre.

Gioffre himself added details about the status of the writer. He described the hospitalization as "another failure of the quarantine."

Gioffre commented that, due to the social, preventive and compulsory isolation, Sebreli "could not go out for a walk" and "was forced to substitute therapeutic walks for his hip recovery with assistance at home".

"Staying home was fatal," he concluded.

Sebreli, a historical critic of populism and in recent years close to Together for Change, had spoken out against the terms of the coronavirus quarantine, last April.

On that occasion, the thinker had signed a letter together with other intellectuals, in which they spoke out against restrictions on the movement of people over 70 years of age.

The letter had originated from the decision of the City of Buenos Aires that older adults had to notify 147 of their intentions to leave their homes. The telephone operator aimed to dissuade them from circulating on the street.

The signatories then denounced that the age group "becomes, under the excuse of pseudo-protection, an object of discrimination and mistreatment."

After several appeals for protection, the City Government reversed the restriction, although it maintained the functionality of 147 to assist the elderly.
