Killing of a newborn in Kerpen: judgment awaited

A young woman is said to have hidden her pregnancy, secretly delivered the child in her parents' apartment and then killed it.

A judgment in the case is announced for Wednesday.

Cologne - In the trial against a 22-year-old who is said to have secretly given birth to her child in April and then killed, a judgment from the Cologne Regional Court is expected today.

According to the manslaughter charge, the German is said to have given birth to a "living and viable" daughter on the night of April 19 in her parents' apartment in Kerpen near Cologne.

But when the newborn started to scream and the 22-year-old feared her parents would discover her, she is said to have hit her daughter in the face several times with her fist.

Then she is said to have strangled the newborn with a plastic bag and a mobile phone charger.
