Knife attack in Amsterdam - perpetrator sentenced to 27 years imprisonment

Armed with a knife, a 26-year-old drove from Germany to Amsterdam and stabbed two people. A court sentenced him now - and considered it proven that it was terror.

A man who stabbed two tourists in Amsterdam last year has been sentenced to 26 years and eight months imprisonment. His guilt for double attempted murder was proved, judged a court in Amsterdam: "The man acted for a terrorist motive."

Jawed S. had arbitrarily injured two visitors from the United States in August 2018 at Amsterdam Central Station with stab wounds. A man has been paraplegic ever since.

S. had not regretted his action in court and called insults against Islam as a motive. He wanted to kill "dishonest and cruel people," said the 20-year-old Afghan. The court awarded the victims damages of around three million euros. The prosecution had demanded 25 years in prison.

Offender arrived by train from Germany

The perpetrator, whose asylum application had been rejected in Germany, lived in Ingelheim in Rhineland-Palatinate. From there he claimed to have raged in anger over a planned and later canceled cartoons contest of right-wing populist Geert Wilders to Amsterdam. "I came to the Netherlands to defend my prophet," he said in court.

After arriving in Germany by train, S. had stabbed the two Americans in the concourse. Shortly thereafter, he was shot down and arrested by police officers.
