The repatriation of former local workers from Afghanistan was chaotic and delayed.

Not all people could be saved - Germany shares responsibility for this.

Federal Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (CDU) has therefore considered resigning.

Kramp-Karrenbauer told the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" (Saturday edition) that she did not get her way with her early commitment to local staff.

“The question is, what deductions do I make from this: One is that I am withdrawing from office.

The other is, I'm fighting, now in the election campaign and hopefully afterwards too, that such a situation no longer occurs and that we will be more able to act next time. ”You decided on the second option.

The closing roll call, which was initially postponed, and the big tattoo at the end of the Afghanistan mission are now planned for October 13, according to Kramp-Karrenbauer.

Even before that, the processing of the mission should begin.

As a consequence of the experiences in Afghanistan, Kramp-Karrenbauer wants a militarily more independent Europe.

She wanted to submit a proposal for a European reaction force to her EU colleagues by the end of October, she told the newspaper.

"That doesn't mean we should part with the Americans," the minister said.

“But there can be situations in which we have different interests, including within NATO.

Then we have to become more capable of acting on our own. "

After the US-initiated withdrawal of NATO troops, the radical Islamic Taliban had surprisingly quickly taken power in Afghanistan in mid-August.

Then, according to NATO, the United States and its allies flew more than 120,000 people out of Afghanistan via a military airlift.

However, numerous people wishing to leave the country had to be left behind.

Opposition parties had previously submitted requests for an evacuation, but the governing coalition rejected them.
