But when he appeared with Chancellor Merkel, he chose an unfortunate comparison.

On Saturday, Chancellor Angela Merkel stood on the stage in his home town of Aachen to support CDU leader Armin Laschet.
The chancellor candidate received praise from the incumbent head of government.
He had repeatedly spoken in speeches and at appearances about the European Union's work of unity and campaigned for peace and the future of Europe.

It is not irrelevant, stressed Merkel, who rules the country.
"I would like to tell you from my experience that there are always points in the political life of a Federal Chancellor. It doesn't matter who governs, but you have to make the right decision."

Laschet was also resolute in one of the last appearances before the election on Sunday.
"We always want to win, just like Alemannia," he said, referring to the local football club.
But is that a happy comparison of the candidate for chancellor?
The audience on site had to laugh and people also enjoyed themselves on Twitter.

The reason: Aachen was still playing in the Bundesliga in 2006, so they met teams like the record champions FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
Then the crash followed, in 2013 the club even relegated to the Regionalliga West.
There have also been two insolvency proceedings since 2012.
The comparison of always wanting to win as a Union like Alemannia Aachen is therefore perhaps a little unfortunate.
In the trend barometer of RTL and ntv, the SPD was three percentage points ahead of the Union with 25 percent.
In an Allensbach survey, the SPD was 26 percent, the Union only slightly behind with 25 percent.
But it will obviously be a head-to-head race.
In order to become Chancellor, Laschet must therefore hope that things will go better for him than for Alemannia.
