The new edition after the long break was successful: Around 1000 participants delivered top performances at the 23rd Tegernsee Triathlon in fantastic weather.

Gmund

- Almost four minutes ahead after cycling: "He's got that in his pocket," spokesman Gidi Beilhack was sure when the tall leader of the Olympic discipline, Tom Hug (SV Bayreuth), after swimming 1.5 kilometers and 40 kilometers of cycling to the ten-kilometer running route via Gut Kaltenbrunn up to the Bad Wiessee Golf Club.

Four and a half minutes later, third-placed Lucas Rettenmeier countered: "They should dress warmly," shouted the pursuer and sprinted so energetically around the corner at the Seeglas lido that he almost ran over the baffled presenter.

Even Beilhack, who was otherwise not at a loss for a spell, briefly stopped spitting.

So far, no triathlete has given him an interview during the competition.

Not the only premiere at the 23rd edition of the Tegernsee Triathlon.

The start time was also pushed back by ten minutes.

The reason: The last train that was supposed to pass the level crossing in Seeglas before the closure was late.

There was a risk that the athletes would have to wait in front of the closed barrier after swimming.

But the approximately 1000 registered athletes and the many spectators took it easy.

After four years of waiting (the triathlon fell victim to bad weather in 2019, and the coronavirus in 2020 and 2021), they also managed to muster a few extra minutes of patience.

Confident: Tom Hug won the Olympic discipline.

At exactly 9.10 a.m. the time had come.

Gmund's third mayor and sports officer Christine Zierer fired the starting pistol.

Fractions of a second later, the water of Lake Tegernsee, which had been shining calmly in the morning sun and, according to organizer Peter Targatsch, had a perfect temperature of 19.4 degrees, was whirled up by wild crawling movements.

Only one athlete stayed on the shore: his swimming goggles broke when he put them on.

Spokesman Beilhack asked Zierer, smirking, whether she hadn't aimed correctly at the starting gun.

Then he launched a spontaneous search call - and seconds later the saving replacement from the audience was there.

It is also this family atmosphere that makes the Tegernsee Triathlon so popular.

The starters in the sprint triathlon (swimming 600 meters, cycling 20 kilometers and running five kilometers) warmed up in a good mood by dancing to the lively sounds of the DJ music or waved happily into the cameras of their companions despite all the tension.

But even after leaving the transition zone, the athletes were never alone.

Thanks to the many helpers and volunteers from the fire brigade and rescue service, they could always feel safe.

Even the buses of the rail replacement service did not slow them down when cycling between Tegernsee and Hausham, as the police officers skillfully guided them through the route in the appropriate time slots.

Fast: Daniela Kleiser rushed far ahead of all other women.

In the meantime, the organizers were unable to influence the respective state of health of the athletes.

With Hannes Hinterseer (2018 sprint winner), Simon Schachenmeier (2018 Olympic third place) and Andreas Lenz (Ironman participant 2019), three prominent local heroes had to cancel the Tegernsee Triathlon from the calendar because they were injured or ill.

Targatsch emphasized that an extraordinary wave of cancellations did not have to be accepted. And otherwise, the managing director of Evotion Events was completely satisfied with the smooth new edition of the Tegernsee Triathlon in the most wonderful, albeit quite sweaty, summer weather.

It was not for nothing that Beilhack warned the athletes about the route: "It's no walk in the park here."

Holding up the district flag: The starters of the Geiger Medius Bike Base Team won the women's and the mixed relay in the Olympic discipline.

Nevertheless, Hug didn't let himself be disturbed and in the end achieved a sovereign start-finish victory in 1:59:33 hours.

Daniela Kleiser (TSV Grünwald) even won the women's race with a lead of almost 17 minutes (2:10:24 hours).

In the sprint, Pavel Pesek (Czech Republic) was the first to cross the line in 1:00:14 hours, the fastest woman was Anna Trützschler (TG Biberach) with 1:07:09 hours.

Hinterseer defended his 58:47 minutes from 2018 in his absence.

And Rettenmeier?

In the end, he couldn't quite keep up with his declaration of war, but still moved up to second place (2:05:24 hours).

Nevertheless, he left a lasting impression – like all the other triathletes who, despite being totally exhausted, reached the finish line beaming with joy and overjoyed.

Youngsters are taken care of: (from left) Carina Latin, Pia Westermeier and Zoe Aldenhoven were the youngest participants and won the sprint relay.
