Liverpool FC mourns club legend Ian St John.

The former Scottish professional footballer, who had played over 400 games for the Reds, died Monday at the age of 82.

The Liverpool announced on Tuesday and quoted St John's family: "It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce that we have lost our husband, father and grandfather after a long illness," the message said.

He died peacefully with his family.

St John had moved from Motherwell FC to Anfield in 1961 for the then record sum of £ 37,500, and was promoted in his first season with the Bill Shankly-trained Reds.

From 1961 to 1971, St John played 425 games in the red jersey and scored 118 goals for Liverpool.

With him, the team won the English championship twice and the FA Cup once.

For the national team of Scotland St John appeared 21 times.
