Nantes prison in turmoil.

A 36-year-old man committed suicide on Saturday evening in the disciplinary district at the Nantes remand center, we learned from the prosecution this Sunday.

Alone in his cell, he was discovered during the first round of evening supervisors, at 8 p.m., hanged with his sheet.

Attempts to resuscitate the Samu were unsuccessful.

The prison houses prisoners serving short sentences or awaiting trial.

According to a prison union source contacted by Ouest-France, this 36-year-old man was "psychiatrically fragile".

"A few days ago, during a medical extraction at the Nantes University Hospital, he had been particularly agitated and had tried to seize the weapon of one of the escort agents", explains this same informant to our colleagues.

It is the second suicide in less than three days in this remand center which has 958 prisoners (including 788 housed) for 573 places, according to the Interregional Directorate of Penitentiary Services of Brittany, Lower Normandy and Pays de la Loire.

Ouest-France specifies that 100 of them would sleep on mattresses on the floor.

Already four suicides in May and June

The same source confirmed that a 35-year-old man had already been found dead, hanged in his cell, this Thursday, in the establishment.

He was then taken care of at the Regional Medical Psychological Service (SMPR), where “he was being treated.

He suffered from psychological problems and had already been hospitalized in psychiatry.

“We have more and more detainees who suffer from psychiatric problems, deplores this Sunday morning William Cozic, union representative of prison guards (FO), with Ouest-France.

Despite the means implemented and the presence of nursing staff, we are not adapted to the management of this type of profile.

Those who want to achieve their goals always succeed because we do not have the means to monitor each prisoner 24 hours a day…”

The malaise seems deep in this remand center hit hard by prison overcrowding, since in May and the end of June, four other prisoners had also ended their lives, according to the regional daily.
