If violence escalates in the Middle East, this often has consequences for Jewish communities in Europe.

Reports of anti-Semitic attacks have increased following the recent outbreak of violence in the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.

In the British capital London, too, there has been significantly more violence against Jews parallel to the new clashes in the Middle East.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 87 such cases in May, according to a freedom of information request from the PA news agency, the results of which it has now reported.

The number is therefore more than four times higher than the average for the previous months.

Since May 2018 there have been between seven and 22 cases per month.

"When it boils up in Israel, it boils up here too"

"When it boils up in Israel, it boils up here too," explained Chaim Hochhauser from a neighborhood organization in the Jewish district of Stamford Hill in London.

In May, the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians in the Middle East escalated violently for several days.

The most recent outbreak of the conflict followed clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces on the Temple Mount (Al-Haram al-Sharif) in Jerusalem and in the Arab-dominated east of the city.

The Palestinian Hamas fired more than 4,300 rockets at Israel.

The army responded with heavy air strikes on the Gaza Strip.

According to the Ministry of Health there, 254 people were killed in the Gaza Strip, and 13 in Israel by Hamas rocket attacks.

The Jewish community in London was the target of several racially motivated attacks during this time, Hochhauser reported.

For example, tires were cut from cars belonging to Jewish families and stones were thrown at a Jewish home.

"Such behavior and abuse against individuals or groups has no place in our city," said the Metropolitan Police in a statement.
