(CNN Spanish) --

This Sunday one of the most anticipated astronomical events of 2022 will occur: a total lunar eclipse.

It is one of the most anticipated events because this year there will only be two total lunar eclipses, and one of them is this May.

A lunar eclipse can only occur during a full moon, when the Sun, Earth, and Moon line up and the Moon passes into Earth's shadow.

The Earth casts two shadows on the Moon during the eclipse.

The penumbra is the partial outer shadow, and the umbra is the full, dark shadow.

There are three types of lunar eclipses: penumbral, partial and total.

The latter is the one that will take place in a few days and occurs when the Earth blocks all the light from the Sun and prevents it from reaching the Moon.

Can it be seen everywhere?

No. It will only be visible to people in Europe, Africa, South America, and North America (excluding the Northwest regions).

What time to turn to heaven?

The total lunar eclipse will be visible between 9:31 p.m. ET on May 15 and 2:52 a.m. on May 16.

  • Miami, United States: from 9:31 p.m. to 2:52 a.m.

  • Mexico City, Mexico: 8:31 p.m.-1:52 a.m.

  • Bogota, Colombia: 8:31 p.m.-1:52 a.m.

  • Buenos Aires, Argentina: 10:31 p.m.-3:52 a.m.

For all of you who live in the Eastern Time zone, the following animation from NASA will show you the maximum point of the eclipse (00:11 hours) and what it will look like throughout the process:

Coincides with the "flower moon"

According to the Farmers' Almanac, the full moon of this total eclipse is called the "flower moon."

"In most areas of the northern hemisphere, flowers are abundant in late spring. Trees and meadows are filled with brightly colored flowers. Hence the name of the May moon: the full flower moon" , indicates on its website.

How to see the eclipse?

NASA recommends that, if you are in an area where it will be visible, you go out and see it in person.

However, if you are not in Europe, Africa, South America, North America, or if it is cloudy in your area, the agency will have a live stream for you to enjoy starting at 11:00 PM ET.
