PALERMO - After a long closure, the Mac di Gibellina reopens to the public tomorrow, with a completely renewed setting, which, together with those of the Orestiadi Foundation, represents the most important contemporary art museum in Sicily. The inauguration is scheduled for this afternoon. Among others, the presidents of the Sicilian Region Nello Musumeci and of the Regional Assembly Gianfranco Miccichè, the bishop of Mazara del Vallo Domenico Mogavero, the vice president of the Region Gaetano Armao and the regional councilors Manlio Messina and Alberto Samonà will participate. During the evening the actor Alessandro Preziosi will read fragments of "The night of Gibellina" by Massimo Recalcati. There is also a tribute to Franco Battiato by his historic keyboard player and great friend Angelo Privitera who will perform some songs by the singer-songwriter, who died in Milo in mid-May on the piano.

The vast collection of the Mac is important both for the value of the works and for their significance. Rediscovering the lost identity through the new languages of art, all the art interventions of Gibellina Nuova are born from the dream of Ludovico Corrao, the great mayor of the town, who wanted to turn a small agricultural reality in the Sicilian hinterland into a great museum outdoor art. After the earthquake of '68, Corrao set himself the problem of restoring an image to a reality uprooted and reconstructed hastily and costly in another place with urban plans and projects descended from above, which had erased the memories and traditions of its inhabitants. To support him in this utopian enterprise were many intellectuals, artists and architects of international fame, first of all Pietro Consagra who with his door opened the way to what would become a luminous beacon in the dark reality of those years in Sicily. Gibellina's project received important acknowledgments. In 1989, his Orestiades, unforgettable seasons in the theater on the ruins of the old city, the works of art, which redesigned the urban territory, even landed at the Louvre with a presentation conference by Jack Lang and an exhibition at the Petit Palais in Paris as spearhead among European contemporary art projects in small towns.unforgettable seasons in the theater on the ruins of the old city, the works of art, which redesigned the urban territory, even landed at the Louvre with a presentation conference by Jack Lang and an exhibition at the Petit Palais in Paris as a spearhead among European projects of contemporary art in small towns.unforgettable seasons in the theater on the ruins of the old city, the works of art, which redesigned the urban territory, even landed at the Louvre with a presentation conference by Jack Lang and an exhibition at the Petit Palais in Paris as a spearhead among European projects of contemporary art in small towns.

This is the climate in which the Museum's collection was formed, where the greatest artists, especially Italians, of that time from the Forma 1 group (Accardi, Consagra, Dorazio, Sanfilippo, Turcato, Perilli), in Schifano, Angeli, exhibited Festa, Scialoja, Paladino, Cucchi, Boero, Isgrò, Guttuso, Maria Lai and many others. Almost all of them are present in the museum's collection, rich in over 400 works. To get an idea of the importance of Gibellina in those years, just remember that the great Joseph Beuys held the last exhibition there. Like the others, the artist stayed in Gibellina and the account of those days was entrusted to the pen of a very young Fulvio Abbate. Then time, politics, lack of funding made that dream more difficult. The Museum closed and the outdoor works deteriorated, because the Municipality could not bear the costs of the restoration alone. Even the beautiful Cretto di Burri, which wraps the ruins of old Gibellina in a white shroud, was in danger of being lost due to lack of care and funds. The only reality, which in all these years has continued to work fruitfully in the field of theater and visual arts, is the Orestiadi Foundation, created by Corrao and chaired by Calogero Pumilia.

The restoration of the Cretto and the project for its enhancement by the architect Cucinella, the reopening of the Museum in the new layout of the Culture Councilor of Gibellina Tanino Bonifacio, are an important sign of a reversal of the trend and of the real interest of the Region. In fact, extraordinary interventions are needed to preserve the equally extraordinary project represented by Gibellina.
