Vice-Admiral Rolland will replace Admiral Rogel on August 1 in this key position as President's military advisor.

The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, has chosen his new private chief of staff. This is a key function in the military organization chart. At 56, Vice-Admiral Jean-Philippe Rolland, commander of the naval forces, that is to say surface vessels of the French Navy, will succeed the admiral at the end of July Bernard Rogel, who held this position since 2016.

The appointment could have taken place last year, the former "pasha" of the aircraft carrier Charles-de-Gaulle having already been spotted by the Head of State. But Emmanuel Macron had decided to extend the mandate of Admiral Rogel a second time, after a one-year extension in 2018. After a third extension last May due to the Covid crisis, the submariner Bernard Rogel will give in instead, at 64 years old.

Trust and loyalty

The private chief of staff is one of the closest collaborators of the President of the Republic. The CEMP post was created by General de Gaulle in 1959.
