Name

: Meirav Cohen, Minister of Social Equality.

Who I am

: For many years I did not like my name and then I realized that I am called Meirav for a reason, that I do my best in everything I do, try to do as much as I can. Very sensitive to human beings, which is what attracts and discourages the pursuit of politics.

Roots

: Morocco. Dad was orphaned by his mother at age four, and Grandpa, who had a grocery store, married Grandma's sister, when she was 14, as part of the album, and she raised the children. In the early 1950s, when my father was 17, they immigrated to Israel from the small village from the Atlas Mountains and reached a transit camp in Ramla.

When their hut caught fire, they also lost the little property they had and Dad became the breadwinner of the family. After a year they came to Jerusalem, and he drove a bus, worked on the construction of railroads, worked in agriculture. He always said that in his military service as a car mechanic he felt for the first and almost only time in his life a sense of equality.

Mother's side from the city of Paz, a large family with 13 children who made a living from Grandpa's shop.

They immigrated to Israel when their mother was a girl and when they tried to get them off the bus in the south, they refused to get off and insisted on coming to Jerusalem.

They settled on Bar Yohai Street.

Grandpa worked in Tnuva and Grandma raised the tribe.

When Dad's brother saw Mom, he fell in love with her but in the end Dad won her over, courted her, gave gifts to her parents and asked for her hand.

After the wedding they lived in a small apartment on Hebron Road, Dad worked for the "Revolution" cooperative, truck drivers who were engaged in transporting chemicals and over time bought a few more.

When I was in fifth grade we moved to Mevaseret, a much more established environment.

My childhood

: It can be divided into 'before and after' a harbinger. The standard at home was that there were no classes, clothes, restaurants and trips abroad, but everything related to studies, books, private lessons and equipment, did not save. Mother would spend all the money she earned on the nursery we had at home.

I worked with her and my love for children is from there. This is one of the hardest jobs there is and it prepared me practically for raising my children, when in addition, I was the busiest babysitter in Jerusalem. To this day I meet people who tell me I took care of them.

We lived on the Hebron Road during the difficult period of the Intifada. In the attack on the pedestrian mall on Purim, to this day we are in touch.

On the other hand, it also put me in insecurity, because my parents did not go to university, did everything with ten fingers and did not take anything for granted. So I felt the need to prove myself.

I wanted to be a journalist, following in the footsteps of my older brother, who was a news photographer, and took me with him more than once. I saw in the press a tool for correcting injustices, a right to shed light on problems, and to change reality. In elementary school I appeared on community television and in high school I wrote in "Voice of Time" and "The Whole City."

Gali Tzahal: I set a goal to get to Galatz. On the way there my feelings of inferiority worked overtime and I learned a lot for exams and eventually I was accepted into the special operations department and was the producer of "The Last Word" with the late Uri Orbach, who today I sit in his office, Gidi Gov, Irit Linor and Jackie Levy.

I really wanted to be a reporter and I managed to convince someone in the station's warehouse to give me recording equipment, with whom I went out at night to look for items.

In the morning I would put the reel on the news editor's desk, who ignored me over and over again, until one article went into Razi Barkai and thanks to her I moved on to become an environmental reporter, then consumerism and industry and submit economic corners.

When I graduated, I worked for two years as a macroeconomic reporter at YNET, without having a degree in the field and sufficient knowledge, which made me shut down and learn basic concepts such as what is inflation and what is an index, and then I was appointed Ariel Sharon's economic spokeswoman.

Ariel Sharon

: Our first meeting was inside the aquarium, and Sharon, as usual, ate. He would always take the sausage out of the sandwich to save on carbs and was charming and human. I grew up in a Likudnik family, after whom one of the children was named Sharon, so this position was groundbreaking for all of us.

I went through the disengagement there, a period of scarring and hardship. Do not forget to visit the communities after evacuated, terribly torn nation, calls talks with the residents at night, and then had his stroke. I stayed a little with Olmert and realized I was depressed and I need therapy.

Awakening

: I started studying while working office of the Prime Minister and when I left , I entered with all my might to study for a degree in economics and business administration, an abnormal Hanna who is in the library of the Hebrew University all day and while studying to establish "Awakening".

We were a group of young people without money, but with an ideology and mission to wake up Jerusalem that we love so much. Until then it had not occurred to me to get into politics, but when one experiences this sense of competence, one cannot turn the wheel back. We managed to get into the city council and I was deep in activity in the council and faction for five years and I started studying for a master’s degree in business administration and urban planning and I met Yuval.

Yuval

: My husband, deputy head of the National Economic Council, worked under Eugene Kendall and Avi Simhon, holding a professional position as an economist. We met when he was the chairman of the Ofek cell of the Labor Party and I set up the Awakening Cell, for the negotiation meeting on running together he is the one who came and since then we continue to run together.

We have three children, we live in Jerusalem and use a fleet of help so that each of us can fulfill himself.

It works great until the moment you call from school in the morning we forgot to bring a white shirt, at noon the babysitter from Breeze and in the evening announce that the girl has been exposed to a verified patient in the class.

I have been blessed with a nuclear family that wants my success and sees it as a mission.

Crowd Action

: For two years I ran the Public Trust organization, which handles consumer complaints, where I first experienced team management and budgeting and where the window to the old world opened and then I founded Crowd Action, a startup that identified people affected by similar injustices and connected them with attorneys , When the profit was based on payment from the lawyers.

At the same time we opened the "headquarters for the fight against the oppression of the elderly", reached hundreds of volunteers around the country and worked as a guerrilla organization. We collapsed companies through shaming and aggression and managed to return millions of shekels to the elderly.

Politics

: After we managed to get large clients from abroad to startup, I received the offer to enter politics from Bnei Gantz. I left the company to partners, I returned money we received to the chief scientist and joined him.

When she asked me again after two years, I hesitated and refused. Four years later I was more emotionally mature, because professionally you always learn new things. As a social activist you are in consensus, which is pleasant, and in politics you find yourself in difficult situations, work hard and do not always get the recognition.

Netanyahu's government

: was terrible. Peretz The corona crisis was a series of election rounds and an economic crisis, and when we did not meet the agreements we decided in advance, there was no budget and it was impossible to give a socio-economic solution, I gave up. Every day there was something else that did not materialize In the party they left. The producer of it was in negotiations on the Ministry of Justice and when Nissenkorn left, that was my breaking point.

I thought that after all the mistakes made, it would be best to stand behind Yair Lapid and I made every effort for Ganz to choose this option.

When he seriously considered alternatives that did not suit me, and after a series of conversations between us, I moved on to a future and it felt like blabbering on and navigating back to the last point where you knew the way.

Yair carries this government on his back, he allowed its establishment and the cessation of trolling and he is the one who produces compromises in the meetings.

Ministry of Social Equality

: I served in it for seven months under Netanyahu and this is my second term. He serves as a lobbyist for vulnerable populations, the elderly, Arabs, women, the ultra-Orthodox, the elderly and Holocaust survivors, in front of the other ministries. We build plans and create collaborations.

Regarding the elderly, for example, I do not replace the Ministry of Welfare, Home Affairs or Health, each of which deals with one area related to them, nursing homes, nursing, Social Security, my strength is in matching. I formulate a plan, present it to the relevant office, and give a shekel for every shekel he gives it.

When I entered the office I made an order. I brought in the treatment of the ultra-Orthodox, Holocaust survivors and LGBT people and published Israel digitally, which has nothing to do with our activities.

Arabs

: We built a broad plan with government ministries, to establish fire stations in Arab localities, infrastructure, transportation, welfare, education, a program And for the first time you can bring about real and profound change.

Holocaust survivors

: We managed to put NIS 300 million into the budget, which will be transferred to survivors who immigrated after 1953 who are discriminated against, and are only entitled to an annual pension.

Along with raising the income guarantee and funds from Germany, they will have an additional 13,000 shekels a year, which is not enough, I know, but we must continue to help them more.

(Photo: Reuven Castro)

Raising the retirement age

: It is not good for a woman to retire at 62 and her average life expectancy is 85, to be 23 years without employment. We are asked to raise the retirement age, but we have built a package of supportive measures for those who are ejected from the market early, which includes a one-year unemployment benefit of 70% of the last wage, a negative income tax and a dedicated grant, and if approved it would be reasonable.

Elazar Stern

: Our intolerance of sexual harassment is important, and handling anonymous complaints in any area is a must in my eyes. I also had an anonymous complaint when I was in the Prime Minister's Office. Elazar's position is different from mine and he did not formulate it well. Later - I will speak completely differently,

Colette Avital

: I know you well through working with Holocaust survivors and she is a brave woman.

I do not judge why she did it now and not before, maybe she did not have the strength.

Leisure

: I most like to read stories with the girls on the bench in Beit Hakerem.

Looking to the future

: to improve our capabilities and specialization in the office and hope that I will continue to change from politics or civil society organizations.
