A Malaysian court on Wednesday overturned the verdict of a judicial inquiry which had ruled out a criminal act in the death in 2019 of the young Franco-Irish woman Nora Quoirin.

Judge Azizul Azmi Adnan spoke at the High Court in Seremban, near the capital Kuala Lumpur, via video link because of restrictions linked to the coronavirus.

The 15-year-old girl, suffering from a slight mental handicap, had disappeared the day after the family arrived at the Dusun resort hotel, about 70 km from the Malaysian capital.

Searching for 10 days had mobilized hundreds of people, helicopters and dogs.

The body had been discovered on the edge of the jungle, next to the tourist complex.

In January, after a judicial inquiry, a judge concluded that his death was probably due to "a mishap" in the jungle and not to murder or sexual assault, ruling that no one else was. had been involved in this disappearance.

An open verdict would be "appropriate"

The parents of Nora Quoirin, a French-Irish couple who reside in London, do not believe their daughter could have ventured into the jungle alone during the night and believe that she was abducted.

They said they were "extremely disappointed" with the verdict and filed an appeal for an open verdict, suggesting that there are still unresolved issues.

The family lawyer, Louise Azmi, had estimated that an open verdict would be "appropriate", during a hearing last week.

The police repeated that they had no clue that could suggest a criminal trail in the death of the teenager and believe that she herself came out of her chalet through the window.

But her mother said she heard suspicious noises in the cabin the night she disappeared.

The autopsy had concluded that the girl had probably died of internal bleeding induced by hunger, after spending more than a week in the rainforest.
