Manchester United vice-president to resign at year-end

2021-04-21T00:50:04.665Z

In a kind of mess linked to the creation, already almost aborted, of a European Super League, Manchester United announced on Tuesday that its vice-president Ed Woodward will resign at the end of 2021. Surely one of the first consequences of the putsch missed by the twelve founding clubs.

The boat on which the twelve founding clubs of the Super League are mounted is pitching strongly on Tuesday and some people are starting to be thrown overboard. The project of a quasi-closed European league is already almost buried, its failure is already severely disrupting the organizational charts of the secessionist teams. Manchester United announced on Tuesday that its vice-president, Ed Woodward, will resign from his post at the end of 2021. If

The Athletic

recalls that this decision would have been taken a few weeks ago, there is no doubt that the current context, extremely tense, has brought forward the date of this announcement.

“I am extremely proud to have served United and it has been an honor to work for the greatest football club in the world for the past 16 years. The club is well positioned for the future and it will be difficult to leave it at the end of the year, ”said Ed Woodward in the statement released by the Red Devils. The Englishman joined the Mancunian club in 2005 before becoming its vice-president in 2012. Under his leadership, Manchester United won a Premier League, a Cup, a League Cup, a Europa League and two Community Shield. A fairly low balance sheet for a club with colossal means. Pharaonic investment that does not fail to recall in the press release. “We have invested over a billion pounds inteam since I've been here and I'm particularly pleased with the progress the players have made under the able leadership of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaching staff over the past two years. I am sure that with the changes we have made on the pitch and in the staff in recent years, this great club will soon be lifting trophies. He deserves it".

Will Manchester United follow City?

While fans have been particularly unhappy to learn that Manchester United are entering the Super League, this reminder of the club's monstrous spending may have been unwelcome.

Some see in the increasingly expensive transfers made in recent seasons by the Mancunians, the reasons for the creation of this new competition which would have paid off part of the debt.

“The past 16 months have brought so many unique challenges and the club's work in the community and around the world during the Covid-19 pandemic has been heroic.

The financial impact on football clubs has been severe, but United have been one of the most robust and resilient clubs in the face of extraordinary financial pressures, ”he argues.

This premature announcement of his resignation is perhaps a harbinger of Manchester United's withdrawal from the European Super League.

His neighbor citizen, bowing in the face of popular retribution, has already announced that he has finally given up participating in this competition.

Chelsea and Atlético Madrid are also said to be set to emulate the English club.

It wouldn't be surprising to see Manchester United follow suit.
