In Rome, a 37-year-old tourist crashed down the Spanish Steps in a Maserati SUV, damaging the world-famous attraction.

Rome – Occasionally motorists go on an odyssey – and end up in many a strange situation.

In Switzerland, for example, a Mercedes got stuck on the steps of a shopping center and in Munich, too, a BMW got stuck on the steps next to a brewery.

Such actions are of course quite embarrassing for the driver - especially when such a mishap happens on one of the most famous stairways in the world.

A 37-year-old has actually done it: he thundered down the famous Spanish Steps in Rome in a Maserati SUV.

It should be clear to most that an SUV is not a real off-road vehicle.

And that you should definitely not drive down stairs in a Maserati Levante, too.

A 37-year-old tourist did it anyway and raced down the world-famous Spanish Steps (Italian: Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti) in the rented SUV, surveillance videos show.

A similarly strange action was recently delivered by an Audi driver in Hamburg when he drove his A4 through the middle of the train station.

It is not yet clear how exactly the Maserati driver climbed the stairs – but the action is likely to cost him dearly.

Because on his "departure" he demolished the world-famous tourist attraction - at least three steps were damaged according to media reports.

Apparently, the man actually managed with the help of passers-by to get the car off the stairs again – and then made off with it.

But the escape of the 37-year-old tourist from Saudi Arabia ended at Malpensa Airport.

The police had found out about the stair driver through the car rental.

He was reported for "serious damage to cultural and monumental assets".
