The Madrid tennis tournament is classified in the Masters 1000 category, the second most important tournament category after the Grand Slams. This season, eight Masters 1000 are scheduled in the ATP calendar. Rolex Monte Carlo Masters, Miami Open, the Rome, Toronto, Cincinnati, Shanghai, Paris tournaments and the Mutua Madrid Open, the latter taking place at the moment. The first Masters 1000 of the year, in Miami, was won by the Polish Hubert Hurkacz. ATP Monte Carlo saw the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas be crowned. The Mutua Open in Madrid is therefore the third Masters 1000 of the season, and it is a tournament that has been taking place on clay since 2009 at the site of Caja Magica. Without much surprise and as at Roland Garros, Monte Carlo or Barcelona, it is the Spaniard Rafael Nadal whois the most often imposed on this tournament in Madrid. The Taurus of Manacor have won five times, and their last title dates back to 2017.

The defending champion is the Serbian Novak Djokovic, but he is forfeited for this 2021 edition. He lifted the trophy in 2019 because the 2020 edition could not be held because of the cessation of competitions.
This year, the set was particularly rich with the presence of Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, Andrey Rublev, Daniil Medvedev as well as many French people such as Jérémy Chardy, Benoit Paire and Adrian Mannarino.
The final of this Masters 1000 in Madrid takes place this Sunday, May 9 at 6.30 p.m., and it is fully broadcast on Eurosport live.
