Assistant to the Russian President and head of the delegation for negotiations with Ukraine, Vladimir Medinsky, reiterated today that his country is interested in Ukraine being a neutral country and a peaceful neighbour.

The New York Times quoted Medinsky as saying, in statements he made during an interview with him, that Russia is still interested in concluding a peace agreement with Ukraine that would make it a neutral, peace-loving and friendly country with its neighbors.

Medinsky added that the Ukrainian negotiators had already agreed to most of the draft agreement, but most likely they represent that part of the Ukrainian elite that is still interested in reaching a peace agreement, while another part of the elite does not want peace and derives direct financial and political benefits from the continuation of the war.

Medinsky noted that sooner or later countries find common interests and harmony, reach peace and mutually beneficial cooperation, and said, "Our task as negotiators is to make sure that this happens as quickly as possible."
