(CNN) --

It's the ultimate getaway destination for celebrities, honeymooners and families, all eager to relax in a perfect paradise.

Sitting serenely in the warm blue waters of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives islands guarantee the whitest sandy beaches, pods of dolphins, dreamy sunsets and an unforgettable underwater world.

2022 marks half a century since the country's first resort opened, when guests had to wade through waist-deep water to reach land.

Fortunately, access has improved considerably since then, and today atoll resorts stretch across more than 800 kilometers of ocean, from the north to the south of the country.

This is a selection of establishments that will open their doors this year, as well as a complex that recently began receiving guests and another that underwent a major renovation.

The Fari Islands, an archipelago made up of four idyllic islands, are located in the northeast of North Malé Atoll, 45 minutes by speedboat or 15 minutes by hydrofoil from Velana International Airport.

They include Patina Maldives, a new hospitality concept from Capella Hotel Group, which has 90 contemporary villas and 20 studios by renowned Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan.

Unlike most of the other properties on this list, Patina recently opened, so you can book right now if you need a quick getaway.

Beach and pool villas range from one to three bedrooms and offer understated, sustainable luxury as well as stunning views.

If you manage to stop sunbathing by the pool, you can also relax even more with wellness trips, culinary experiences, free diving or music programs.

The reef, teeming with marine life, from graceful rays to multi-colored corals, is a huge draw, particularly for divers.

Sunrises and sunsets will be mesmerizing, while your dining options will include Japanese teppanyaki and yakitori, as well as secluded dinners on a private sandbar for the ultimate in romance.

A lush seven-hectare island in the middle of a 100-hectare lagoon means there's plenty of room to relax, whether on land or in the water, when it opens in May.

The eighty villas in six categories seek to integrate into the natural environment, built with natural materials whenever possible.

A special attraction is what they call "playful experiences", thanks to the adrenaline rush of the extensive water sports and diving facilities, a gym and a sports center.

Once you've worked up a sweat, treat yourself to dining at the restaurants, including the Beach Club Grill.

Located on the island of the same name, it is only 15 minutes by speedboat from the airport.

The six restaurants and bars include Eden, an adults-only bar specializing in champagne and cocktails with perfect sunset views, while Re-Fuel is a "teens-only area."

This two-island resort pioneered what we now call "barefoot luxury" and had other firsts, including the world's first underwater restaurant and the first underwater room.

To mark the resort's anniversary, 50 overwater villas were refurbished, as were three restaurants and bars.

New features include an adults-only gym, the Majaa Explorers Hub, and the Furaavaru Teens Club.

As for the experience, don't miss the opportunity to swim with whale sharks and manta rays, go on a turtle safari or dazzle your Instagram followers with a sunset dolphin cruise.
