A Mercedes 450 SL from the 1980s with a respectable 'musical' past.

The car is the one that U2 singer Bono Vox, aka Paul David Hewson, bought in 1980 immediately after the Irish band's first big hit, with the album 'Boy'.

The Mercedes, with all the modifications desired by Bono at the time and which then, over the years, changed owners also for reasons related to charitable initiatives, has now been put up for sale on the Car & Classic auction site.

The car, which is now in Dublin and whose livery is gray, has received a number of modifications desired by the rock star who was in his early twenties. In particular, the interiors have been profoundly modified, both in the coatings which have seen the replacement of the 'sober' Mercedes-style ones with others of the spotted type, as well as and above all in the audio system. The cockpit is in fact sprinkled with speakers, the result of a modification expressly requested by the singer to Alpine, specialized in audio systems, to make a custom sound system that at the time cost Bono something like 12,000 pounds.

The entire system gave off such power that the Irish singer himself apparently feared it could catch fire, which is why a ready-to-use fire extinguisher makes a fine sight in the cockpit of the special Mercedes. After being used by Bono, the Mercedes changed hands to Pepsi, to which the artist himself sold it in 2000, on the occasion of a charity fundraiser. The odometer of the 450 SL shows around 260,000 kilometers and has recently undergone some maintenance work.
