The French have a special relationship with meritocracy.
Are the reasons to be found in the history of France and the advent, at the end of the 19th century, of the compulsory, free and secular republican school?
Or in its preparatory classes and its grandes écoles that do not exist elsewhere?
If merit is a value more popular in France than in other countries, it is also perceived as less well defended.
This is the result of the Ipsos survey “The lost paradoxes and illusions of meritocracy in France”, carried out during the Royaumont interviews, which take place on December 3 and 4 around the theme.
A series of paradoxes
In France, merit comes in 5th position for fundamental values, where the nine other countries surveyed - from the United States to Japan via Germany and Turkey - place it, on average, in 7th position.
However, 65% of French people consider that merit is not sufficiently defended, against 47% for other countries.
