(ANSA) - MEXICO CITY, MAY 03 - The government of Mexico has officially presented its apologies to the indigenous people Maya, for the wrongs committed against them after the Spanish conquest.

These apologies, which coincide with the 500th anniversary of the Conquest, were made yesterday at the initiative of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his Guatemalan counterpart Alejandro Giammattei in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, in the southeastern state of Quintana Roo. "We apologize to the Maya people for the terrible abuses committed by individuals and potential nationals and foreigners during the conquest, the three centuries of colonial rule and the two centuries of independent Mexico," said López Obrador, referring in particular to the War of the Castles of the nineteenth century. During the ceremony, the Mexican government also recognized the racism and discrimination that this ethnic minority still suffers, two centuries after the country's independence.

The construction of the Mayan Train, the flagship project of the current Mexican government, was mentioned during the ceremony and drew boos from residents. In June 2020, LopezObrador gave the green light to the construction of the 1,500-kilometer-long line that is expected to cross different parts of the Yucatan Peninsula, where the Cancun resort is located.

However, several organizations reject the project, claiming that it will cause damage to the environment and to several indigenous communities in this region. (HANDLE).
