"Water is life" - but which provider supplies the best mineral water?

Current evaluations by Stiftung Warentest bring a clear and surprising result.

Munich - Water brings man to life.

While one draws it directly from the tap, the other swears by the cool enjoyment from the bottle.

The market offers the full range of choices in terms of quality, taste and price.

However, it is generally known that “expensive” does not automatically mean “good”.

Stiftung Warentest therefore carried out another examination of the products from various manufacturers in 2022 - with refreshing results.

Stiftung Warentest tests mineral water: 32 "Classic" varieties on the test bench

32 classic mineral waters were put to the test at Stiftung Warentest this year, i.e. those with a lot of carbonation (approx. 7-8 g/l).

As Stiftung Warentest

explains,

“mineral water may only come from originally pure sources and must be bottled directly at the source.

In addition, the underground water resources should be protected from contamination.”

Water from the tap or rather from the bottle?

Tell us your favourites:

The varieties had to convince in terms of appearance, smell, taste, but above all with their content.

In previous investigations, Stiftung Warentest paid particular attention to impurities (such as arsenic, lead, nitrate and uranium, germs and pathogens) and mineral content.

Stiftung Warentest does the mineral water check: these are the results

Stiftung Warentest

tested the classic mineral water for

125 different trace substances .

The good news: not a single product exceeded the limit values with regard to "critical substances such as arsenic, nitrate or uranium", and all water was also microbiologically convincing, although the testers detected "e.g. traces of pesticide degradation products or sweeteners" in some samples.

In addition, only six waters had a high mineral content of over 1.5g/l.

Half of the samples even only showed 0.5g/l.

Eight of the 32 classic mineral waters received the grade "very good", 17 pieces were "good", six pieces found the testers "satisfactory" and one product was only "sufficient".

Classic mineral water in the test: These are the winners of the Stiftung Warentest 2022 study

The refreshing result of the classic mineral water check by Stiftung Warentest: Five of the eight test winners can be found on the discounter shelf for a reasonable 17ct/l, namely Lidl Saskia Classic, Aldi Nord Quellbrunn Classic, Aldi Süd Quellbrunn Classic, Penny Classic and Norma Surf Classic.

At the same price, the Rewe supermarket also impressed with the “very good” Yes Classic.

Especially with regard to questionable ingredients, the inexpensive products were ahead with "good" or even "very good".
