It is a disease that almost no one had heard of before this spring of 2022. Monkey pox (or monkeypox) - so named because of its discovery in 1958 in macaques in the laboratory - is caused by a virus originally present in the forests of West and Central Africa.
Although several small-scale epidemics have already taken place in the past, this is the first time that such a large number of cases has been observed and that the epicenter of the epidemic is outside Africa.
Nearly 2,500 patients have been identified in France since the beginning of May.
In total, around 27,800 cases have been reported over this period across 80 countries.
An epidemic incomparable to that of Covid-19.
But very quickly, the French health authorities reacted by recommending a vaccine to people at risk.
How could it be available so quickly when designing a vaccine usually takes several years?
