Monkeypox: three members of the same family infected in a campsite in the Var

2022-08-12T17:33:22.243Z

These three people were infected with monkeypox before their arrival. However, the health risks for the other occupants of the establishment are low.

Three cases of monkeypox have been reported in a family on vacation at a campsite in the Var (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur), said the Regional Health Agency (ARS), in a press release.

“It is an intra-family contamination prior to the arrival of these people on the campsite”

, added the health organization before specifying that the family had been

“isolated and had left the premises”

.

Their state of health does not inspire

"concerns".

Few risks for the occupants of the campsite

The ARS also considered that

“the isolation or vaccination of the staff and residents of the campsite”

was not

“justified”

.

The family did not have

“close and prolonged contact”

with other holidaymakers or staff members.

They did, however, use the campsite facilities, such as toilets and showers, but the risk of transmission via surfaces

“is very low”.

The ARS adds, moreover, that the premises are regularly cleaned.

Campers are however invited to monitor their state of health in the coming days and hygiene measures have been reinforced within the establishment.

The ARS advises them to consult a doctor in the event of the appearance of suggestive symptoms such as fever, headaches, lymph nodes, muscle pain or even a rash.

As a reminder, the virus can be transmitted by

"direct contact with the skin lesions or the oral, genital or conjunctival mucous membranes of an infected person"

,

"indirect contact by sharing linen, toilet utensils or injection”

, or even by

“respiratory droplets during direct and prolonged contact with the infected person, face-to-face”.

In France, 2,601 cases of monkey pox have been recorded until Tuesday, according to the results of Public Health France (SpF) published on Wednesday.

All are adult men, with the exception of 23 women and 2 children, the health agency said.
