When adults snore it is hard to ignore, but somehow in children - many treat it with forgiveness and affection, even though it may indicate a medical problem.

Iris Cole interviewed Dr. Ari Dirou, director of the Pediatric Otolaryngology Unit at Dana Hospital in Ichilov, on the "Expert Clinic" podcast, to understand what causes children to snore, how it affects their sleep and what to do with it.

At the beginning of the interview, Dr. Dirua clarified that "it is not normal" for children to snore, although it happens a lot. "For a child snoring is a sign that he is not breathing well in sleep."

Snoring is especially common between the ages of two and six, as "it is the age at which the tissues of the tonsils, or the third tonsil or adenoid, are larger in them, and this is the main cause of snoring in children."

How is snoring detected in children?

You should stand by them while they are fast asleep, and just listen.

It starts with a slight snoring, which actually shows that there is a blockage, if there is a more significant blockage you see that the chest is really straining, and when the blockage worsens - there are already real breathing pauses in sleep.

"We don't want to get into situations where the child has a lot of sleep apnea, and parents don't always recognize it, because they really treat snoring as something cute. Sometimes it's really cute and it's not a problem, but it can indicate a problem," Dr. Diro.

Even sleeping with an open mouth, a child who is well above average, a lot of saliva or saliva, a nasal sound - all of these can indicate a blockage that makes it difficult to breathe at night, according to Dr. Dirou.

What are the consequences of snoring in children?

The most important thing to understand about childhood snoring is that a snoring child puts effort into breathing at night.

"These children waste a lot of energy, and they are actually thin. They are children who do not develop, do not grow up, many times they have ADHD just because their sleep is disturbed by this breathing," explains Dr. Dirou, "Sleep in children is a big part of life. "And it is very important for their physical as well as cognitive development, so the more severe the disorder, the greater its impact on these things."

Do not ignore.

There is also a link between the quality of sleep and nocturnal enuresis, probably due to the secretion of hormones that is not done properly because sleep is not good enough.

And that's not all - studies show that academic achievement is also heavily influenced by snoring.

In fact, those children who snore are in most cases in the bottom decile in first grade.

"You say 'what is cute and cool', but in the end there is a continuous impairment in the child's abilities," explains Dr. Dirou.

what do we do with it?

In children, the main cause of snoring, as mentioned, is an overgrowth of the tonsil tissue, or the third tonsil - adenoid or polyp.

"These things create a kind of suffocation ring for the child that is mainly expressed during sleep," Dr. Dirua explained.

"Ultimately, unlike adults, you have surgery here that heals the child. Parents come after a month and they are just in the market. They did not understand how difficult their child was," said Dr. Diro. "This surgery really helps children." as with any surgery, there are risks. "in recent years, we did our best to lower these risks," he adds.
