Mother and daughter charged with murder for butt augmentation that caused the death of a woman

A mother and daughter in California were arrested and charged with murder after

illegally performing a buttock augmentation procedure that resulted in the death of a woman

, police said.

The incident occurred in October 2019, but Libby Adame, 51, and her daughter, Alicia Galaz, 23, were arrested until August, Los Angeles police said.

On August 5, they were jailed and released after posting bail, online jail records show.

Galaz is scheduled to appear in court in December.

A date has yet been set for Adame.

It is unclear if they have already hired an attorney.

Karissa Rajpaul, 26, died on October 15, 2019

in a hospital after coming to Adame and Galaz for what police described as an "illegal butt augmentation procedure."

"The victim passed away shortly after," said a police spokesman.

Rajpaul's death is listed as a homicide from acute cardiopulmonary dysfunction

and intramuscular and intravascular silicone injections, according to the medical examiner's office.

Robert Dinlocker, a police detective, said Tuesday that Adame and Galaz performed three procedures on Rajpaul and that the young woman died after the last one.

Police found no medical certifications in California for the suspects and said they believe they had not received any training.

Adame and Galaz

offered their services primarily on social media and charged between $ 3,500 and $ 4,000 per session

Dinlocker said they were pressuring their clients to accept a three-session cycle.

"They were uncontrolled silicone injections that

, but the problem is that, according to the coroner's office, there are important arteries in that area and it is likely that doing so could rupture one, ”Dinlocker said.

After realizing Rajpaul was in danger, Adame and Galaz called 911 and fled the home after paramedics arrived, Dinlocker said.

Since the news of the young woman's death was known, the

police department has received "dozens and dozens" of calls from other people who claim to be victims

.

Many have complained of infections, numbness, disfigurement and swelling after going to the two women to inject their buttocks.

Additional charges will be filed, as authorities hope that Rajpaul's story will help others to perceive the dangers of undergoing illegal procedures.
