The husband of Agnes Tirop, a 25-year-old Kenyan athlete killed in mid-October, was indicted on Tuesday, November 16 for murder by a court in the city of Eldoret, in the west of the country.

Ibrahim Rotich, commonly known as Emmanuel, has denied the charges brought against him during his appearance.

Agnes Tirop, double world medalist in the 10,000m and 4th in the Tokyo Olympics over 5,000m, was found stabbed on October 13 at her home in the city of Iten, a famous training center for long-distance runners and a half -background.

According to the indictment consulted by AFP, Rotich is suspected of having killed the young woman the day before the discovery of her body.

He was arrested on October 14 in Mombasa, a coastal city in the south-east of the country.

Rotich, in his 40s, was declared fit to appear on Monday.

The court will rule on December 1 on a request for release on bail.

A rising star in Kenyan athletics

The murder of Agnes Tirop moved Kenya and exposed the pressures female athletes face in a male-dominated society.

Born into a family of farmers in the Rift Valley, Agnes Tirop began her sports career less than ten years ago.

She was revealed in 2015 by winning, at only 19 years old, the title of world champion in cross-country.

Twice a bronze medalist in the 10,000m at the Worlds in 2017 and 2019, then fourth in the 5,000m at the last Olympic Games in Tokyo, she was considered a rising star in Kenyan athletics.

A month before her death, she had broken the world record for the 10 km road in an all-female 30′01 ′ 'race in Herzogenaurach (Germany).
