Cellist and composer Yuval Mesner, who was a member of Tattoo and Mess bands, has died at the age of 56, after contracting lung cancer.

In the late 1980s, Mesner was convicted of raping a minor and serving a six-month prison sentence.

The musician Eran Tzur, with whom he collaborated for many years, wrote after Mesner's death: "The death of Yuval - a dear friend, co-creator and great musician" hurts and will hurt. "

Masner, a native of Norway, came to Israel at the age of 5 with his family, and at a young age began playing the cello.

He studied at Rimon, where he met his bandmates, including Eran Tzur and Alona Daniel.

He composed some of the band's songs, including "Hide and Seek" and "Loneliness."

In 1990 he was a member of the band Blagan with Dan Toren and Dana Berger, who was known for the song "Silent" - which Masner also composed to the words of Jonah Wallach, and also played in the ensemble "East-West Ensemble".

In the late 1990s and 2000s, he was a significant partner in the work of Eran Tzur, and composed songs such as "Evening on Monday, Kislev" and "Summer".

He has also played with musicians such as Fortisharoff, Mashina, Dan Toren, Yarona Caspi and Jasmine Even.

In July 1989 launched a minor under the influence of alcohol, tied her up and raped her twice.

He was subsequently convicted of rape, and sentenced to six months of actual imprisonment and one year of probation.

Criticism of the light sentence was leveled in the media.

In the early 2000s, Mesner reunited with his tattoo friends, Tzur and Daniel, as part of the "Mesner Quartet", which performed chamber arrangements of the songs of the three.

In addition, he created the music for the independent film "Urban Tale", and for other plays, dance performances and series.

Later that decade he won the Golden Hedgehog Award for composing the play "Bloodthirsty Man" at the Alley Theater.

In September 2018, a protest arose following Mesner's participation in a reunion performance by the band Tato, following his conviction for rape.
