The US space agency NASA has released unique sound recordings made by the Mars rover "Perseverance" on its research mission.
The vehicle is equipped with a microphone on the mast, which rotates with the camera movements, and a second, fixed microphone on the vehicle body.

»Sounds on Earth and Mars sound different.
On earth, noises have a sound pattern that is very rich in overtones.
You can hear several frequencies, which gives the sound a nice depth of sound.
On Mars, the atmosphere attenuates many of the higher frequencies.
So you hear rather low frequencies.
The sound is much more isolated and muffled. "

The first sound recordings were made in February, and NASA has published recordings of wind phenomena on the planet:

For the analysis of rock samples, the Martian rock is bombarded with a laser.
At the same time, high-resolution images of the properties of the samples are created.

The rover was able to record one of his research colleagues back in May: The first audio recordings were made that a spacecraft on another planet has ever made of another spacecraft.

The conclusion of the researchers from the recordings: The sounds on Mars have significantly more bass than on Earth - and the sound carries over longer distances.
Also important: the scientists can use the sound recordings to draw conclusions about the quality of their own measuring instruments - which are millions of kilometers away from Earth.
