Nearly 100,000 dead from Covid-19: families facing mourning

2021-04-15T04:19:48.557Z

The official death toll linked to the coronavirus is about to pass a new symbolic threshold in France this Thursday, while we are law

Some will rather remember when they heard this bizarre name of 'coronavirus'.

Others, of its detection on French soil.

For many, it will be the first life he took.

On February 14, 2020, at the Parisian hospital Bichat, an 80-year-old Chinese tourist became the first death from Covid-19 recorded in France, but also in Europe.

Ten days later, the disappearance of Dominique V., 61, a teacher from Crépy-en-Valois (Oise), who became forever the first known French victim of this respiratory infection, marked the spirits.

At the time, no one (or very few) imagined the infernal and death spiral into which the epidemic was going to lead us.

Deaths linked to Covid-19 in France: "This is the first time that we have counted so many deaths from an epidemic"

After Great Britain, after Italy, France is preparing to cross, this Thursday, April 15, the symbolic bar of 100,000 deaths from Covid-19 listed in the official report.

One hundred thousand trajectories mown by the same virus, in less than fourteen months.

If we had to draw a typical robot portrait of the patient carried away by the Covid, it would be a man, over 65, with comorbidities: cardiac pathology, hypertension, diabetes, etc.

But the disease has also struck where it was not expected, as with Julie, the bubbly 16-year-old teenager whose cough worsened at the end of March 2020. A very old grandmother, a cousin in full force of the 'age, a friend of a friend… Everyone has a history with the virus.

A daily plane crash

And yet, today, few are those who shudder as in the past in front of the quantified toll of the victims.

One would almost forget that the current 350 to 400 daily deaths are the equivalent of a crash of a large airliner.

One per day.

Not to mention the deaths that do not yet appear in official statistics.

“We have gone into a form of chronicity.

When an event recurs, it no longer has the same inaugural charge, recalls Gaëlle Clavandier, sociologist and anthropologist at the University of Saint-Etienne (Loire).

We got used to the situation, it is part of our lives, which does not mean that we accept it.

Admittedly, there are still many, many deaths, but another count is now occupying the minds: that of the vaccinated ”, points out the researcher, who has devoted much work to death.

“We have the impression that this number is no longer a subject.

We went from an extreme focus - and very anxiety-provoking - to an excessive minimization of the problem, regrets the psychiatrist Thierry Baubet.

We have to imagine new forms of communication to reconnect the population to this reality, because the denial that sets in is suffering for the families concerned.

"

Psychological support

Professor Thierry Baubet knows this all the more since he founded almost a year ago an unprecedented psychological consultation to support the “bereaved” of Covid-19 at the Avicenne hospital in Bobigny in Seine-Saint-Denis, where he exerse.

More than 300 families in Ile-de-France have been taken care of, with a resurgence of calls since February.

Recently, the teams have received people from whom several members of the same household have died of the disease.

And also traumatized by the departure of a young patient, that nothing predestined to die so soon.

She is a sixty-year-old mother to whom the quadra son does not give any news for a few days: cough, doctor, hospital and, in 24 hours, to learn that the one she gave birth to is dead, without even having been able to. to kiss.

A hundred thousand dead, and how many more to come?

How many mournings have been weakened by a period when all funeral rites and traditions have been disrupted?

As for the victims' associations, they always ask the government for a national tribute ceremony.

“I don't know what form it should take, don't referee Thierry Baudet.

But when there are disasters, like this health crisis, the nation must find the right way to show its support for the victims.

It is a way of uniting, collectively.

".

Government spokesman Gabriel Attal promised, this Wednesday at the exit of the Council of Ministers, that it would be done, but without further clarification.
