Contracts have been signed with publishers and their publications, including Der Spiegel and Die Zeit, the Handelsblatt business dailies and the Berlin-based Tagesspiegel.

Google announced Thursday that it had concluded contracts with several large German publishers, including the magazine Der Spiegel, to remunerate their content posted online, in application of the recent European directive on rights related to copyright.

These press editors will be paid for extracts from articles used online and which go beyond very short extracts, which are not covered by neighboring rights.

The amount of the agreements with the publishers was not disclosed.

The American giant adds that

"a number of other discussions with large and small publishers are at an advanced stage"

.

Content remuneration

The Spiegel welcomed the agreement which crowns "

a constructive working relationship with Google for many years

", according to Stefan Ottlitz, managing director of the magazine.

Platforms like Google "

are important partners for us, in particular because they generate a lot of traffic for our websites

", reacted for his part Rainer Esser, managing director of the editor Zeit.

These neighboring rights are a new component of intellectual property applied to digital platforms, established after long negotiations during a European copyright reform in 2019, which Germany was one of the first countries to transpose into its internal law.

On Wednesday, AFP and Google announced the signing of a European agreement also covering the remuneration of the content of the international press agency used by the search engine for five years.
