In Nigeria, apparently several people were held in a Koranic school. It should be mainly about boys - many were chained.

In Nigeria, the police claimed to have released more than 300 people from a Koranic school. Among these were, above all, children who were allegedly tortured and sexually abused there.

Following evidence from local residents, security forces raided the school in the northern Nigerian city of Kaduna on Thursday night, discovering the sometimes under-age victims, police spokesman Yakubu Sabo said.

According to his information, the students come from different countries. The government is currently providing food to them. The children are five years and older.

Inhuman conditions

The students were found in degrading and inhumane conditions, Sabo said. About a hundred students were chained in a small room. The boys were then detained on the pretext that they should be taught and "corrected" in the Koran.

The Koran school was reported to have been around for about ten years. The operator and six teachers were arrested according to police.

In the predominantly Muslim north of Nigeria there are many private madrasas. They replace the often deficient state institutions.
