Yesterday (Thursday) marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
Although in recent years there has been a change in the way the world treats violence, whether physical, verbal or sexual, the number of women murdered by their spouses remains appallingly high.
Many women think this can not happen to them, but the bitter truth is that any woman can fall victim to violence regardless of marital, social or economic status.
Evidently, some of the most powerful and well-known women in the world have experienced in the flesh violence from the men in their lives.
The shame and stigma that accompanies domestic violence victims have begun to disappear over the years and Madonna, Charlize Theron and Halle Berry are just some of the stars who spoke openly about the abuse they suffered.

was light years away from the Hollywood glamor.
She grew up in South Africa and her father was an alcoholic who used to beat her and her mother.
One night her father returned home after an evening saturated with alcohol and started firing in all directions.

, shot him and killed him.
She was arrested but released after her shooting was found justified and defined as self-defense.
In an interview with Diane Sawyer, she said that if she could change one thing in the past - she would force her parents to divorce.

The case of

is one of the best known in the world. The couple, who had one of the most scrutinized relationships in the music industry, were exceptionally absent from the 2009 Grammy Awards ceremony.
The photos of the singer, who suffered many bruises on her face, were leaked to the media "by a woman for whom a check is more important than values," as Rihanna herself described it.
Years after the incident, Brown himself recounted what happened in the vehicle. He said Rihanna found out he had cheated on her and started raving. "She tried to pick up my phone and really fought with me. I punched her and opened her lip. As soon as I saw it, I was shocked. I did not understand why I hit her so hard. She spat blood in my face. It just upset me more."
Rihanna then issued a restraining order against Brown.
He was sentenced to five years probation, a year of participation in a program to prevent domestic violence and a year of community service.

was a particularly violent man and in an interview with NBC in the past, she said that "my mother was a battered woman and a respectable part of my childhood. Domestic violence can happen to anyone, even celebrities."
According to her, the difficult plays to which she was exposed as a child, had a profound effect on the adult she became.
"I struggle with self-worth issues. There were times when I chose the wrong partner and ran away the moment I suspected he might use violence against me."
Berry's mother also faces the consequences of the dark period and according to the actress, "she still does not understand why she came to terms with the abuse and exposed me and my brother to such an environment."

The two were married for four years, between 1985 and 1989 and their life together included a number of severe cases of violence against Penn against the singer.
In one case, she arrived at the hospital after a rabbit hit her in the head with a baseball bat.
In 1989 she filed a complaint with the police after a rabbit tied her to a chair and abused her for nine hours.
He slapped her, strangled her, threatened to shave her head and tried to force a sexual act on her against her will.
Madonna filed a complaint against Penn, but dismissed it about a week later. Years after the shocking case and the divorce of the two, the singer denied the incidents but police reports from that period revealed a different story.

The huge singer grew up with an abusive father and in a documentary, she told about the atmosphere of fear in which she grew up.
"I have witnessed many unpleasant incidents. I remember beatings, urgency and a feeling of insecurity. This feeling, of terrible weakness, is the worst in the world. I found refuge in singing and fell in love with music out of the pain I experienced at home."
Aguilera managed to break out of the cycle of violence with the help of her ex-husband, whom she divorced in 2011 after the two gave birth to a child together. "I did not want my child to witness quarrels or feel uncomfortable at home. "I know. I know my goal is to strengthen, empower and help women make their voices heard."
