Nuclear weapons: China is building more missile silos in the desert

The new images show around 110 plants in a remote region of China: Apparently the country is still working on expanding its nuclear arsenal. The reaction from the US is clear.

For the second time in a short time, satellite images have surfaced showing suspicious construction work in northwestern China.

According to a report in the New York Times, they suggest that the country is continuing to increase its nuclear arsenal.

In its article, the newspaper refers to the results of the Federation of American Scientists, which evaluated the recordings.

Accordingly, the pictures show at least another 110 silos for missiles that could be equipped with nuclear warheads.

The plants are located near the city of Hami and around 400 kilometers away from the construction site near Yumen, which became public at the beginning of July.

The Strategic Command, responsible for nuclear weapons in the US Department of Defense, commented on the recordings on Twitter: “For the second time in two months the public can see what we have been saying for a long time about a growing threat in the world and the veil of secrecy about it . "

Two Republican politicians also commented on the pictures that have now become known.

Congressman Mike Turner spoke of a "threat to the United States and its allies."

He called the assumed expansion "unprecedented".

His party colleague Mike Rogers called for a rapid modernization of the US nuclear arsenal.

The current discovery fits in with warnings from the Pentagon of rapid advances in China's nuclear capabilities.

Admiral Charles Richard, who commands the US nuclear force, reported at a congressional hearing in April that China was undergoing a "breathtaking expansion", including a growing arsenal of ICBMs and new mobile missile launchers.

Xi Jinping with clear words on the anniversary

At the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party in early July, President Xi Ping once again set the course: China would continue to build a "world-class" army to defend its national interests, he stressed.

"The Chinese people will never allow foreign forces to harass, oppress or enslave us," Xi said in front of the applauding audience (read more here).

So far it has been assumed that China has only 250 to 350 nuclear weapons.

The construction sites that have now been discovered at least suggest that this number could increase.

However, hundreds of new silos do not automatically mean that all of these facilities will also be equipped with nuclear weapons.

On the contrary, it is considered a tactical maneuver to leave other powers in the dark as to where exactly nuclear weapons are currently located.
