Öko-Test examined oatmeal.

Four products failed completely.

A discounter has therefore already reacted.

Hamm - For many people in North Rhine-Westphalia and throughout Germany, breakfast is a real question of faith: some like it sweet, others prefer it hearty.

For many who start the day with a rather sweet meal, oatmeal is simply a must.

Öko-Test has now examined numerous of them - with some frightening results.

Oatmeal in the test: Four times "insufficient" - discounters reacted

The good news first: 18 out of 29 oat flakes examined received the grade "very good".

A large part of the products therefore meet the highest food standards.

The oat flakes that received the best rating in the test report include eleven organic and seven conventional products.

Among others, the organic oat flakes from Alnatura, dm, Rossmann (Ener Bio) and Kaufland (K-Bio) scored "very good".

But the conventional oat flakes from several supermarkets and discounters were also convincing in the test, for example from Lidl (Crownfield), Edeka (Gut & Billig) or Kaufland (K-Classic).

Conversely, this means that good does not necessarily have to be expensive.

The oatmeal from Lidl and Co. is already available for 69 cents per 500 grams.

But not all products did so well in the Öko-Test.

Although seven other oatmeal passed the tests with the grades "good" or "satisfactory", the remaining four failed with a bang.

"Unsatisfactory" was the test result for four tested oat flakes, none of which were organic products.

Oatmeal in the test: Products failed because of mold and pesticides

The affected products are available from Rewe (Yes!), Aldi Nord and Süd (Knusperone), Norma (Golden Breakfast) and, for example, from Real, Combi or Markant (Every Day).

In one case, however, it should be "was" instead of "is": According to Öko-Test, the discounter Norma took the affected batch out of sale in response to the test results.

The other dealers have not (yet) reacted, as reported by wa.de.

But what are the reasons why the four oatmeal did so poorly in the test?

On the one hand, increased or even greatly increased levels of mold toxins (T-2 and HT2-2 toxins) were found in laboratory tests.

“Mould toxins in oatmeal are of course disgusting at first, but not only that. The toxins found can weaken the immune system and have a cytotoxic effect.

And from oat flakes one expects exactly the opposite - that they are healthy.

Oatmeal is not acutely toxic.

As is so often the case, the dose makes the poison.

But a lot of people eat oatmeal in particular, and children too, every day," explains Katja Tölle, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Öko-Test.

However, the mold toxins are not the only questionable substances that were discovered in the oatmeal during the test.

In all four products rated "insufficient", the laboratory showed increased levels of pesticides such as glyphosate, chlormaquat or mepiquat.

Glyphosate, for example, is classified as “probably carcinogenic” by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

In addition, the plant toxins damage biodiversity.

Öko-Test recently examined other products that should not be missing from many breakfast tables.

When testing nut nougat cream, for example, two of the most popular brands failed with "insufficient".

The butter test also yielded a surprisingly poor result for a branded product.
