Mihambo starts well below seven meters
03.02 a.m.:
The German long jumper Malaika Mihambo landed in her first jump in Tokyo at 6.64 meters.
In qualifying for the final on Tuesday, Mihambo moved up to second place in her group.
Each jumper has three attempts.
World champion Mihambo is considered a gold contender, but recently she had problems with the jump.
At the Diamond League meeting in Gateshead, she sometimes jumped 40 centimeters from the board.
Even on her first attempt in Tokyo, she jumped off much prematurely and then discussed with her trainer.
At the World Cup in Doha 2019, Mihambo had two invalid attempts in the sand before she managed the twelfth-best distance in history with 7.30 meters.
"I have no doubt that I can achieve that," she said in front of Tokyo to the seven-meter mark at the Olympics.
German foil men in the quarterfinals
02:57:
In a one-sided team competition, the German foil men won their round of 16 against Canada 45:31.
In the round of the best eight, Peter Joppich's team (3.45 a.m. / CEST) will now face the favored Americans.
For the German Fencing Association, the competition is the last chance for a medal at these games in Japan.
In the singles, none of the Germans made it past the round of 16.
As a team, Peter Joppich, Benjamin Kleibrink and Andre Sanita turned the game around after a botched start and three goals behind, and meanwhile extended the lead to 19 goals.
Even a strong final sprint for the Canadians could no longer prevent the German team from reaching the quarter-finals.
