Olympic Games: Elodie Clouvel: "I have dreamed of being an Olympic champion since I was 4 years old"

2021-08-04T16:44:19.076Z

Vice-Olympic champion in Rio, the French pentathlete wants to climb a step in Tokyo, despite a last season disturbed by physical concerns.

How do you feel ?

And how was your arrival at the Olympic Village?

Elodie Clouvel:

I feel very good, very happy to have finally been able to discover the Olympic Village and the atmosphere that reigns there. It is nice and I am the happiest to be here. Of course, the experience is very different from what I have had before in terms of conditions. But I find the atmosphere, despite some difficulties such as having to eat with plexiglass between us. To converse with everyone at the table, it's more difficult but we adapt. We've been living with this for some time now. And then the reception of the Japanese was remarkable. They are all adorable, taking care of us. It had been a long time since I had felt in a competition. I have the impression that everyone has worked hard to organize these Games as best they can. It's up to us to do our job now.

How do you approach this new Olympic experience?

With great desire.

At each Games, I am different from the one before.

On the other hand, I still have the same ultimate dream of being an Olympic champion, which is normal when you were Olympic vice-champion the time before.

How did your preparation go?

The start of the season has been a bit complicated. It happened to me some health concerns, but also of a personal nature. It's part of life, and it happens in a high performance athletic career. I always held on anyway and I said to myself: "You will get there Elo ', you will go up the slope". Today I can say that I am in Olympic form. I waited to be in this state all season but it did not come but finally, it's perfect that it happens now. I am very happy about it.

Olympic gold is your only goal…

It's been a goal since I finished competing in Rio five years ago. It was my first words when I won my silver medal, which was also a fabulous moment of personal accomplishment. I had given the best of myself, that day I couldn't do better. But that's why now, I want to realize this childhood dream that I nurtured since I was 4 years old. The teacher asked me what I wanted to do later and I told her Olympic champion. It's a dream that's deep inside me.

The climatic conditions, with a very humid heat, are a fact that you have taken into consideration…

I did internships at the meeting, the last world championships took place in Cairo at a given time when it was very hot. And personally, I have always liked the heat, which is not a problem for me. All the competitions that I did where it was very hot like in Tokyo at the test event, it went pretty well for me. So I have no particular apprehension about the heat. It's something my body handles well.
