Olympic Games: French archery has (totally) missed its target

2021-07-30T05:57:21.311Z

The French archers and archers will not bring back any medals from Tokyo, their last chance, Lisa Barbelin, having failed this Friday in the round of 16.

Lisa Barbelin, France's last hope for a medal in archery, was eliminated on Friday in the round of 16 of the individual event at the Tokyo Olympics.

The 21-year-old archer, crowned European champion in 2021 and world number 2, was beaten by Mexican Alejandra Valencia (6-0), bronze medalist in mixed doubles at the Olympic Games.

Faced with an opponent who had already beaten her this year in the World Cup, the Frenchwoman failed to reproduce her fine performances from the first two rounds and seemed more stressed by the issue.

Against Valencia, Barbelin got off to a bad start with a 7 in the first set, when his opponent never scored less than a 9 over the entire match.

I may not have been able to really be in the moment. I was thinking a little too much about this medal I wanted around my neck tonight. I am very proud of the progress made, even if of course I am very sad, because I dreamed of this medal more than anything in the world

”, confided the young woman, on the verge of tears. “

I intend to take this step for Paris (Olympic Games 2024) and for the World Championships which are coming soon, even if the selections are not yet finished for France. I intend to bounce back from this defeat and become someone stronger and flourish as an archer and champion, I hope one day,

”added the Moselle.

Lisa Barbelin, the only French female representative at the Olympics, did a little better than her three male counterparts eliminated in the first two rounds on Wednesday. But the results remain disappointing in these Games where France was aiming for at least one medal. The mixed doubles composed of Lisa Barbelin and Jean-Charles Valladont stopped in the quarterfinals, the men's team fell in the eighth and the three male archers left the individual tournament early. Jean-Charles Valladont, silver medalist in Rio in 2016, and Thomas Chirault were thus ousted from the start in the 32nd, while Pierre Plihon could not do anything in the round of 16 against one of the favorites of the tournament, South Korean Kim Woo-jin. A very dark picture for a discipline which hoped to take a little of the Olympic light to emerge from the shadows.
