Olympics: the improbable false joy of a Dutch cyclist who thought she had won gold

For long seconds, Annemiek Van Vleuten believed to become Olympic champion in Tokyo. But a competitor had crossed the line before her.


Astonishing image at the arrival of the women's road race of the Tokyo Olympic Games this Sunday at the Formula 1 circuit in Suzuka.

Arriving 1'20 "behind the winner Anna Kiesenhofer, Annemiek Van Vleuten apparently raised her arms as if she had won the race! A surreal scene for the Dutchwoman, who was one of the contenders for the final victory just like his compatriots. Van Vleuten thought he had won the Grail for long seconds.

But it was the Austrian Kiesenhofer, breathless at the finish line, who won solo to win gold.

Van Vleuten has to settle for the silver medal.

Remember that runners do not have an earpiece to communicate with their team during Olympic events as is the case with the Tour de France or other races.
