Omicron variant: South Africa considers blacklisting unjustified

The authorities feel punished for being transparent, while the situation in the country is far from catastrophic.


"Excellent scientific expertise should be applauded, not punished,"

lamented a statement from the South African Foreign Ministry on Sunday.

After announcing that a new variant, called Omicron, had been discovered on its soil, South Africa found itself in a few hours completely cut off from the rest of the world.

The flights were canceled one after the other.

The authorities in Pretoria feel punished for being transparent, while the situation with regard to the Covid-19 pandemic is far from being catastrophic in South Africa.

To avoid panic, Joe Phaahla, Minister of Health, clarified that his country had only 3,000 new cases of Covid per day against more than 30,000 in Europe.

He called the reaction of the international community

"unwarranted"
