Under the new coronavirus pneumonia epidemic, all schools in Hong Kong have experienced suspension of classes, resumption of classes, early summer vacation and "online start of school", which may affect teaching progress and learning effectiveness. The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups launched an online homework platform in February this year. A team of more than 190 volunteer tutors will provide free real-time online learning support for primary one to secondary three students. The data shows that the most common subject problem for students is mathematics, accounting for nearly 60% of the overall problem, followed by Chinese and English. The social worker of the Youth Association in charge of the plan estimates that the environmental factors of online teaching have caused more problems in mathematics, because when students encounter mathematics problems they don’t understand, they cannot find the answers directly on the Internet as in Chinese and English subjects. Cooperate with volunteer tutors to explain each step to students for guidance, and believe that the plan can fill the relevant gaps.

In February this year, the Youth Association launched an online homework questioning platform "Good Match, Good Complement", mainly serving primary one to secondary three students.

The Youth Association has launched an online homework-question platform "Good Match, Good Complement" in February this year. The main service target is Primary One to Secondary Three students. The service hours are from Monday to Friday from 4 pm to 10 pm, and Saturdays. 12:00 noon to 6:00 pm.

In addition to seeking support through the project website, students will add Line and Facebook Messenger forms in September of the new school year.

Difficult to find answers on the Internet

Since the implementation of the project, more than 800 students and a total of 2,350 questions have been answered.

According to the Youth Association, more than 70% of the students who asked questions were junior high school students. Mathematics was the most common subject question, accounting for 59.8% of the overall question. Chinese subjects and English subjects were followed by 15.7% and 15.5% respectively. Science and history were respectively. Accounted for 5.4% and 3.5%.

Ou Zijun, a member of the Youth Association and the Development Officer of the Volunteer Group, analyzed that the environmental factors of school online teaching during the epidemic caused more problems for students in mathematics. Most students knew how to find some Chinese and English subjects through online search engines. The answer to the question, but mathematics involves different types of questions, and most of them need to be solved step by step. Therefore, he believes that the online homework plan has supplemented this gap.

Another development officer, Xian Yunyan, believes that in the early days of the epidemic, many teachers used filming to teach, but the types of mathematics questions often changed, and students might need other people to help solve problems with homework.

In addition to mathematics, Supervisor Chung Weilian found that junior high school students have to explore relatively difficult issues in history. For example, he once met a Secondary One classmate who asked about the cabinet system in the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Asking students for help extends from individual subject consultation to subject selection

The program currently has more than 190 volunteer tutors, of whom more than 70 have a bachelor's degree or above.

Ou Zijun said that there was a middle three student who only asked math questions at the beginning, but later found it easier to communicate with volunteer tutors, and gradually revealed to the other party the difficulties he was about to face in selecting subjects and asked how to deal with it.

The district believes that this plan will allow students to relieve pressure and talk about academic issues outside the subject.

Volunteer tutor Xie Yingmin is currently a fourth-year student of the Occupational Therapy Bachelor of Hong Kong Polytechnic University. During the period on duty, a junior high school student asked her about difficulties in entering a higher education and choosing a course. When the other party learned that she was studying in a medical-related discipline, they also expressed interest in the course. Later, I asked Xie about the academic performance requirements for admission to university courses.

She said that when students ask about homework, they usually expect to be informed of the answer directly, but she will insist on teaching slowly and guide students to answer in the form of gradually asking questions in order to benefit them.

Qiu Zhijian, the sixth student of the Anglican Lam Woo Memorial Middle School, is about to deal with the diploma exam, but he has also served as a volunteer tutor in the past summer vacation, hoping to help the teachers and sisters with their own experience to solve academic problems.
