Onslaught of day trippers: Corona stove or important source of revenue?

Despite Corona warnings, so many day-trippers flocked to the district on Sunday that they blocked almost all exit and entry roads.

Whether and how much the pressure to travel increases the risk of infection is, however, controversial.

District

- When Florian Meier drove from Miesbach to a mission in Fischbachau on Sunday, he could hardly believe his eyes.

On Saturday, the medical district coordinator for Corona had appealed to people on the Internet to stay at home and comply with the Corona rules - like many of his colleagues and politicians.

But when he is now driving in sunshine and warm autumn temperatures, he overtakes a long line of cars with blue lights.

A sheet avalanche is pushing towards the Spitzingsee, one into the Leitzach valley.

“No road without traffic jams,” he says.

"I've never experienced anything like this in my 45 years in the district."

Onslaught of day trippers: Corona stove or important source of revenue?

Not an isolated case on Sunday: The entire afternoon, cars from Kreuth-Weißach to the Autobahn in Holzkirchen, reports the Bad Wiessee police.

Google Maps showed a standstill for most major roads.

There was also a traffic jam on the mountain: The mountain rescue service told Meier about 40 meter long lines of people in front of alpine pastures.

“I understand everyone who wants to go to the mountains,” says the doctor.

But the number of infections in Munich exploded.

"When a caravan of peoples then runs up the mountains in single file, without a mask, without anything, then it moves the infection process to our district."

It was never as bad as on Sunday this year.

On Google, almost all of the entry and exit roads were lit dark red (above, means: traffic jam).

At the previous focus areas - Holy Three Kings, Whit Monday and Sunday, August 16 - significantly more streets flashed green (meaning: flowing traffic).

So much for one side of the story.

The other begins with the results of the Contact Tracing Team (CTT) of the health department.

According to the district office, since the beginning of the pandemic, this has not found a case in which a day trippers infected a district citizen with Corona - not a single one.

Although the CTT has recently been unable to determine the origin of the first case in some chains of infection (we reported), the relationship still shows that private celebrations, which have triggered most of the clusters in recent weeks, have so far been significantly more dangerous sources of infection than excursion traffic.

So far, emphasizes Meier.

He holds against it: More people mean more viruses, especially now.

This inevitably increases the risk of infection.

Because corona research is still in the fundamentals, late effects are unknown and the virus attacks the central nervous system, this risk is too great for him.

"We will only see in the next few days, after the incubation period, whether the Sunday will have any consequences."

Sepp Ettenhuber, operator of the Speckalm am Sudelfeld, doubts that. There were also day trippers in line with him on Sunday.

However, this did not increase the risk of infection: "The restaurateurs adhere to the rules," he says.

You shouldn't be the ones to suffer because of this.

Because only five people are allowed to sit at a table, despite the best weather on Sunday, he served half as many guests as on comparable days before Corona.

After a difficult year - 25 weddings alone have been canceled by Ettenhuber - and before an uncertain winter, the Speckalm landlord needs the business.

He stored beer and food.

“If everything goes bad, it will be difficult.” That is also the case with other restaurateurs, he is sure - and encourages day-trippers to understand: “People want to get out of their skyscrapers, Austria is closed.

So come to us.

I understand that."

The Bad Wiessee police confirmed: In the village, at public places and bus stops, people had adhered to the Corona rules well.

She did not issue any punishments.
