For decades, a couple from India wanted new blood. Now they have become parents - at an age when both could be grandma and grandpa. The attending physician speaks of a "medical miracle".

They married in 1962, but their marriage remained childless - until now. In India, an older couple got twins. According to several media, including "Times of India" and BBC, a senior in Andhra Pradesh state gave birth to two girls.

"We are the happiest couple in the world," said her 82-year-old husband of the Times of India. "We have our own children." His wife, who is 74 years old according to The Times of India and 73 years old according to the BBC, said she was discriminated against all her life because the spouses did not have offspring. "People looked at me with accusing eyes as if I had committed a sin."

Again and again they would have tried and contacted several doctors, said the BBC's wife. But never did it work. However, when they met the doctor Sanakkayala Umasankar a year ago, there was a new opportunity for them.

Mother and child are fine

According to the Times of India, the specialist in in vitro fertilization has put together a team of cardiologists, gynecologists and paediatricians to fulfill the couple's desire. Accordingly, the doctors decided after several investigations for an artificial insemination.

During pregnancy, the woman remained under constant observation of the team. Ten doctors had accompanied her closely for nine months. It has kept to all the rules, said doctor Umasankar. "This is a medical miracle."

After the birth mother and child are well. Whether the elderly woman and her husband are the biological parents of the twins, kept the physician to himself.
