A Palestinian was shot dead by the Israeli army in the occupied West Bank on Friday, the Palestinian health ministry said, amid a deadly escalation between Israel and Palestinian armed groups in the Gaza Strip.

The man, who is not immediately identified, is the fifth Palestinian killed by the Israeli army in the West Bank since Monday. The Israeli army said it had "
neutralized
" an assailant who was about to carry out an attack on a soldier near Ramallah. Asked by AFP, the army did not immediately indicate whether the assailant had been killed. "
A citizen
" died after the Israeli army opened fire on him, the Palestinian health ministry said in a statement.
According to the army, a soldier shot an "
assailant
" who first accelerated in his direction in a car, before getting out and attempting to stab him. There were no Israeli casualties in this "
