Will the partial mobilization be a failure for Putin?

Ukraine shares a video of a Russian soldier who is said to have deserted within a very short time.

Kyiv/Moscow - The morale of the Russian troops has reached new lows.

And the partial mobilization imposed by President Vladimir Putin in Russia does not appear to contribute to a powerful army either – on the contrary.

Within a very short time, a soldier who was forcibly recruited in the Ukraine conflict is said to have surrendered.

Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to Ukraine's Interior Minister, on Tuesday (27 September) posted a video on his Telegram channel allegedly showing a Russian conscript.

This was called up just five days ago in the Russian region of Rostov for the war against Ukraine.

According to Gerashchenko, the soldier is the first mobilized Russian to surrender since Putin's partial mobilization.

Ukraine war: Putin's partial mobilization causes chaos

Last week, the Kremlin boss announced the mobilization in a well-regarded TV speech - and in the same breath threatened the West with the use of nuclear weapons.

"In order to defend our homeland, its sovereignty and territorial integrity and to ensure the security of our people and the population in the liberated areas, I consider it necessary to support the proposal of the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff for partial mobilization in the Russian Federation introduce,” Putin said in the speech.

The head of state repeated that it would only be a partial and not a general mobilization - "that means only citizens who are currently in reserve will be called up for military service," said Putin.

Nevertheless, the announcement caused panic among the population.

Russian men are buying plane tickets abroad at top prices, and long traffic jams have been forming at the crossings to Finland and Georgia for days.

Anyone who doesn't make it out of the country or endure the mobilization has to go to the front in Ukraine.

The forced conscripts paint an even more miserable picture than that of the Russian army in general.

Videos on social networks show poorly trained and poorly equipped men, who are often drunk.

Recruited soldier from Russia deserted after a very short time

Ukraine adviser Gerashchenko wrote about his video intended to show the Russian POWs: “Soldiers from the 92nd brigade captured a mobilized soldier who was completely frightened and freezing to death in the forest near Kupyansk.

He defected from his military unit and tried to return to Russia but got lost.”

In the clip, the alleged Russian holds his passport up to the camera and, according to

Newsweek

, urges his compatriots not to take part in the Ukraine war.

After all, there are extremely high casualty figures on both sides.

According to the US magazine, the man added that he was captured on his third day in Ukraine - he only saw the commander of his unit once.

The authenticity of the recording could not be independently verified.

Selenskyj calls on Russian recruits to surrender

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently promised humane treatment to Russian conscripts who surrendered to Ukraine.

“It is better to flee from criminal mobilization than to be crippled and then face the responsibility in court for taking part in aggressive war.

It is better to go into Ukrainian captivity than to be killed by our gunfire,” Zelenskyy said in a speech on Saturday (September 24).

The President declared that he would guarantee three things to any Russian soldier who surrendered.

“First, you will be treated in a civilized manner and in accordance with all conventions.

Secondly, no one will know the circumstances of your surrender, no one in Russia will know that your surrender was voluntary.

And thirdly, if you are afraid to return to Russia and don't want an exchange, we will find a way to ensure that too," said the 44-year-old.
